Event Summary

Our first honoree Gloria Middleton accepted the Equity Award for Leadership in Action, presented by SAG-AFTRA leader and PowHerNY Board member Rebecca Damon. Gloria detailed her journey fighting for pay equity for workers in New York City, and thanked her staff, the CWA Local 1180 Board, and PowHerNY for their support. As she stated:

“In this new administration…. we are going to stand strong. We’re going to stand together. We’re going to stand united. And we’re going to do what we need to do to make sure that not only women, but everyone has the right to be who they want to be, as well as be paid equally in this state.”

New York State Senator Liz Krueger accepted the Equity Award for Leadership in Policy, presented by PowHerNY President Beverly Neufeld. PowHer honored the Senator for her role as the leading author and architect of the New York State Equal Rights Amendment, and her unwavering commitment to passing an inclusive ERA. As she stated:

“After we lost at the Supreme Court level, I knew we had to make sure that not just our laws were the strongest in the country, but our constitution was, to protect our rights to reproductive health, the right to abortion, the right to not have government inserting themselves into private health decisions.”

Sasha Ahuja accepted the Equity Award for Leadership in Equal Rights and Gender Justice, on behalf of the New Yorkers for Equal Rights campaign, the coalition behind the successful passage of the New York Equal Rights Amendment (Prop 1). Mary M. Luke, Board Chair of PowHerNY, presented the award and thanked Sasha and the campaign for mobilizing so many organizations, volunteers, and voters to protect our rights. As she stated:

“Our rights are on the line. Everything is on the line. And here in New York we have done something historic. We have paved the way for how we’re going to win this fight long term, and that is by including every single person in the fight, and leaving no one behind.”

Finally, PowHerNY spotlighted our PowHer the Vote Partner organizations, who collaborated to shape 6 weekly events, recruit speakers, and provide resources. Seher Khawaja, Shoshana Hershkowitz, and Shannon Wong, who all contributed to the PowHer The Vote series in key ways, spoke about the impact of the election action series.

In her video remarks, NYS Attorney General Letitia James congratulated the honorees and acknowledged the importance of PowHer the Vote:

“I want to take a moment to thank each and all of you who are so invested in PowHer over the past four months. You have helped mobilize New Yorkers. You’ve discussed the issues that were at stake this past election on the local, state and federal level, and you pushed to ensure our priorities were top of mind for the millions of New Yorkers who cast their ballots”
