The month of March offers us so many opportunities to bring gender justice advocates together to speak out for equality!
This month, we celebrate Women’s History Month, International Women’s Day (March 8), and Equal Pay Day (March 25) by being advocates for change.
Taking action is especially important in the current political moment, as federal actions are threatening the rights of our communities and families across the country. One key space where we must not lose our power and progress is women’s role in the economy.
That is why this month, PowHerNY will focus on economic equity. New York has passed absolutely essential laws to advance women’s pay equity, including the salary history ban and the salary range disclosure law. Those laws have made New York one of the best states for fair pay. Still much more needs to be done.
Today, NY women only earn 87 cents for every dollar a man makes. This unacceptable wage gap is even wider for Black, Latina, and Native American women in New York who earn 66¢, 60¢, and 55¢ respectively. (Additional stats below).
Now, because of federal action, our steady progress towards addressing the gender and racial wage gap is at risk. To roll back protections that have long been established in law, is not just a threat to our wallets, but also to women’s place in the fight for democracy.
For International Women’s Day, join the movement to uphold women’s economic equity. We call on our state leaders, employers, and all New Yorkers to stand up to reaffirm New York’s commitment to equality.
