Time’s Almost Up! Help Pass Equal Pay Laws Before June 19!

Send a message to Governer Cuomo, Assembly Speaker Heastie, and Senate Leader Stewart-Cousins to pass five (5) pieces of legislation that will address the persistent wage and opportunity gap for women and people of color. These bills have the widespread support of the public and legislature. But, in the hectic last days of session, we must make sure they are a priority!

Although New York has one of the smallest gaps of 89 cents, full-time working Latina women earn 56 cents of what white men earn, and Black women earn 66 cents. Mothers earn only 75 cents when compared to fathers.  These disparities translate into the loss of much needed income for women, their families and our communities.

The strong laws proposed will address this unacceptable inequality.

  • A.5308/S.3692A prohibits employers from using an applicant’s salary history to set future wages. Already passed in New York City and Westchester, Albany and Suffolk Counties, a statewide policy will afford all New Yorkers this safeguard from discrimination.
  • A.8093/S.5248 will expand equal pay for substantially similar work to all protected classes in the private sector, and A.7748/S.838 will cover civil service employees.
  • A.1047A/S.456A provides for remedies and enforcement for civil service employees who claim compensation discrimination.
  • A.7169 /S.1482 will require that contractors with New York State report equal pay data.

These bills will be critical tools in the fight to create economic equality and end discrimination. Tell our leaders to pass them before June 19th so they can become law in New York.
