Right now, our Social Security system doesn’t recognize the work of caregivers – those who take time out of the workforce to care for children or sick family members. The caregiver credit is one policy proposal that could address the needs of this growing proportion of the population, many of whom are women.
Rep. Lowey’s soon-to-be released caregiver credit bill would provide an earnings credit within the Social Security benefit calculation, thereby increasing retirement income for those who have had to reduce their earnings in order to care for loved ones. Since most caregivers are women, a caregiver credit is an opportunity to strengthen women’s economic security.
