PowHer New York condemns today’s draconian and stunning Supreme Court decision which strikes down the right to have an abortion. Doing so, the majority of the Court tossed aside 50 years of precedent, a majority of public support for abortion and the realities and needs of pregnant people. This is a direct hit on women’s bodily autonomy, our freedom and our economic well-being. It will not end abortion care for the privileged, but does threaten the lives and livelihoods of disadvantaged women and our progress toward gender equity.
Fearing this possibility, New York shored up the rights of women with the passage of the Reproductive Health Act in 2019 and a host of laws that protect providers, expand access and fund reproductive care. But even here, we can do more. Today you can join rallies across the state and country. Donate to abortion access funds so NY can help women across the country. And, write Governor Hochul to call legislators back to pass the Equality Amendment.
Please be in touch to share your actions, ideas, and thoughts. Take care of yourself, as this is so painful and shocking for so many of us. Use your vote to speak out for reproductive justice. As advocates for women’s equality, we will not let this stand.
