April 2015 Equal Pay Guide to Action for Organizations

It’s that time of year! National Equal Pay Day is April 14th and this year should be momentous for New York!

2015 FOCUS This year we are focused on passing the equal pay portion of the Women’s Equality Act which is coming up for a vote as early as the week of April 20! A separate bill –A6075/S1 – was introduced by Assembly member Michele Titus in March. It is one of a series of bills the Assembly will take up this session that addresses the needs of New York women.  The New York Equal Pay Bill, A6075/S1, will help insure that women receive equal pay for equal work. Since the Senate passed a “same as” bill earlier this year, if approved in the Assembly, it will go to Governor Cuomo to be signed into law.

After fighting for these provisions and WEA for two years, and for other equal pay bills for more than a decade, we are closer than ever to success. But we are not there yet and must work together to take it over the finish line!

What Organizations Can Do to Pass the #NYEqualPayBill?

ORGANIZE or BE PART OF EQUAL PAY DAY (April 14, 2015):
  • Invite your Assembly member and other representatives to hold a press conference
  • Sponsor a panel or speaker or Host an UnHappy Hour (like AAUW) and invite your network and officials. (Erie County’s new equal pay ordinance is a direct result of one!)
  • Attend the NYC RALLY on 4.14.2015 on steps of City Hall.
  • Other events posted at on our Equal Pay Day page.
SPREAD THE WORD – ENGAGE YOUR NETWORK
  • Action Alerts: Send out your own email alert, or share PowHer Equal Pay Campaign Action Alerts
  • Print Media: Write a Letter to Editor. Our partner AAUW is putting together templates, or pen your own using the facts below and stories of colleagues. (Contact Bev at equalpay@powherny.org)
  • Radio/TV/Cable: Contact your local station and pitch a story on equal pay and A6075/S1. This is news!
  • Social Media: Make sure you are connected to PowHer NY on Facebook and Twitter. We will be very active in the coming weeks. Sign up for our action alerts if you would like sample tweets and posts right to your inbox.
CONTACT THE ASSEMBLY
  • Call your Assembly member: After stating your support, ask if they have questions about A6075 (answers on factsheet). Would they sign on as a sponsor? Would they want to be part of an event, press conference or statement.
  • In-person meeting with your Assembly member during the break 4/1 to 4/21. Take a picture and post AM’s support of equal pay bill online.
  • Submit a Memo of Support: Using the Factsheet, create a short Memo of Support for A6075. Send to us and we will disseminate it. Read PowHer NY Equal Pay Campaign memo of support.
